Every application starts with the SAPS 517 – Application for a Competency Certificate, available from your nearest SAPS station or your Designated Firearms Officer (DFO).

Your application is then sent to the Provincial Firearms Officer within 30 days, and on to the Central Firearms Register within 14 days after that.
Hold on to your SAPS proof of submission along with copies of every form and document you handed in. You'll want these on hand if there are any follow-up queries.
